Here are some amazing facts about World War 2!
Some evacuated children had never seen farm animals before, and were surprised to find that apples grew on trees!
After evacuation ended, there were 38,000 unclaimed children.
Gas masks were often called 'Dickey-birds' as they made you look like you had a beak!.
All signposts were removed during the war. It was thought that if the enemy invaded, they wouldn't know where they were. As a result, a lot of British people got lost.
The government would not build your air raid shelter; instead they would deliver the parts to your doorstep and let you get on with it!
While you were hiding in your air raid shelter, there was a danger your house might be robbed!
40,000 men served on German U-Boats (submarines) during World War 2 and 30,000 never returned.
During the blackouts many people drowned from falling into rivers or walking into ponds! When the allied forces reached the Rhine River in Germany, the first thing the men did was pee in it! Everyone from the lowliest private to the prime minister himself Winston Churchill joined in. General George Patton had himself photographed in the act!
The only nation that Germany formally declared war on was the USA.
World War II lasted for 6 long and bloody years and eventually involved every major world power; it cost the lives of some 60 million people.
When Buckingham Palace was bombed Queen Elizabeth (the current Queen's mother) , said she felt just like the victims of bombing in the East End of London.
The very first bomb that the Allies dropped on Berlin in World War II killed the only elephant in the Berlin Zoo.
Short trousers became the normal dress code for boys as this helped to save on material and were easier to repair. Many young boys did not own a pair of long trousers until after the war was over.
On 1st September 1939 the television broadcasts were stopped, there was no TV until 1946! At that time very few people owned a television but if it happened now could you manage 7 years without TV?
