The Gods of Rome
The Romans believed in many different gods and goddesses. For everything imaginable they had a God or Goddess in charge.
Mars, for example, was the god of war. This meant he was good at fighting and was the protector of soldiers. A Roman soldier would most likely pray to Mars for strength in battle.
Minerva was the goddess of wisdom, intelligence and learning. Perhaps a schoolboy would ask her to help him learn his grammar or understand his maths better! Maybe the emperor might even ask Minerva to give him wisdom so that he might rule the country wisely.
The Romans had hundreds of different gods. This entire collection of all their gods was called the Pantheon.
Apollo God of Light
Cupid God of Love
Bacchus God of Wine
Diana Goddess of Hunting
Discordia Goddess of Strife
Jupiter God of Victory
Luna Goddess of the Moon
Mars God of War
Mercury God of Travellers
Minerva Goddess of Wisdom
Neptune God of the Sea
Pluto God of the Underworld
Venus Goddess of Love
