Dads Today
Modern day dads... well we know all about these fellows don't we! You may not realise though, that dads today might be studied in the future.
We have looked back at dads from ancient Egypt and Rome, right through to their place in England's history so why not take a look at modern day dads, just like we have with the ancient ones, even if your dad seems ancient himself!.
What do you do?
Why not find out what you dad does? Ask him about his job and what he does in his spare time and then you can see how he might compare to a dad 100 years ago. You might find that, like Victorian dads, he also enjoys ballroom dancing!
There are so many different and interesting jobs in the world today. Maybe your dad is an engineer, a builder or even a scientist, all of these jobs have been around since the Egyptians but the way they do the job will be different.
Ask him some questions, search the internet or just have a look around to find out about the world that we live in and dads live in. I bet its just as interesting as finding out about dads through history.
Can you dig it?
In 1994, the channel tunnel running all the way under the English Channel was completed. It is 31 miles long and a train takes around 35 minutes from the start in Folkestone, to the finish in Coquelles in France. It would have taken your dad and 15,000 other workers nearly 7 years to complete! British dad would have dug from one end while a French dad would have dug from the other end, and they would've met in the middle.
Egyptian dads may have helped build one of the Seven Wonders of the World, but the American Society of Civil Engineers has declared the Channel Tunnel to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.
Modern Living
Life today is not as hard as it might have been in the past; with the many discoveries and developments through the 20th century, life has become much safer, and better, for everyone.
Thanks to modern day science, all of our drinking water is clean and healthy, and disease is easily treated, even if you have to have an injection! Housing has improved considerably, especially now everyone has a flushing toilet inside.
Dads no longer have to work all day from sunrise to sunset to earn enough for the family. Most dads will work an 8 hour day, and some can even work from home. Imagine if you could work from home, no more schoolteachers to bother you!
A Usual Day Today
Let's have a look at how dad might spend his day in modern times.
For a start he wouldn't have to get up as early as an Ancient Roman, but he may get up around 7am, take a shower and eat some breakfast. Breakfast could be anything from cereal, toast or maybe some fruit.
Off to work, but there's no walking - he might take the car or the bus, and some dads often cycle to work to help keep pollution down. Once at work, he will have a range of modern inventions like the computer, Internet and even the ball point pen to help him do his work more easily.
The working day generally finishes around 5.30pm and he would make his way home. There is a much wider range of activities to enjoy, and they aren't restricted to rich and poor like in the olden days. Dads might watch football, go to the cinema, play Playstation or spend the night with the family and watch a DVD.
Future History
Whatever job modern dads do, it will influence the way the country is seen in the future. Everything that we do now is called our "culture", and this website has looked at Egyptian culture, Roman culture, Tudor culture and so on. If people do look back, what do you think they will find about our culture?
There are many things that might influence the way people see our culture, some good and some bad. Our culture may be remembered for problems like terrorism and pollution, but it can also be remembered for achievements like our leap forward into space, the development of the Internet, and lets not forget Playstation!
Dads will always be remembered, as they have been there helping out every step of the way no matter what they do. All dads have lent a helping hand in moving us forward and taking the next step.
TV? No thanks!
How many times have you come home to find your dad hogging the sofa and watching TV? Shouldn't he be exercising to get rid of that beer belly? At least that's what mum says!
But during the last couple of years, it has been found that people are watching the web more than they are watching TV. Does your dad hog the computer more than the television? At least he isn't a couch potato anymore, now he's a desk jockey!
Are You Copying Me?
In 1997 scientists in Scotland managed to create an exact copy of a sheep from a single cell. The sheep, named Dolly, became the first successfully cloned mammal in the world.
The discovery was a great scientific achievement, but it also raised a lot of questions about whether it was right or wrong to clone animals, and if human clones were possible.
Imagine if you had a clone, you could send them to school for you and make them tidy up your room!
